Job offers that ask you to pay to start

Longer note · updated October 2026

Real work pays you. Any offer that asks you to pay first, however it's described, isn't a job.

Common forms

  • Sign-up or activation fees before you see any work
  • Mandatory training sold by the person offering the job
  • Equipment or starter kits bought from them
  • Deposits to unlock tasks or withdraw earnings
  • Forwarding money through your account, which can involve you in a crime

Warning signs before the request

Unsolicited messages, unusually high pay for simple tasks, contact only through private chat apps and pressure to decide today.

What to do

Don't pay or forward anything. Stop replying and report the account. If you've already paid, call your bank straight away and report it to the police or your country's fraud reporting service.
